Sun, chlorine, ocean salt, wind, and pollution are the elements that can cause lasting damage to summer skin, leading to premature aging and skin cancer.  Fortunately, it is still possible to enjoy summer to the fullest and still have skin that looks and feels healthy all over your body by following these simple skin restoration & natural beauty tips.

 1. Rethink Your Summer Skin Tone

With more cases of skin cancer being diagnosed each year than for breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer combined according to the American Cancer Society, covering your skin with proven UV blockers is imperative. Even your healthy looking summer skin tone is a sign of sun damage, skin damage that can lead to skin cancer and signs of aging.

Choose sunscreens that blocks UVA (wrinkle causing) and UVB (cancer causing) rays using ingredients that have been used for a long time in humans and have known side effects, such as zinc oxide. Make sure your face sunscreen (and self-tanner) is noncomedogenic so it block your pores and cause a breakout. Face sunscreen should be worn daily under your moisturizer. Be sure to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15, as under FDA rules that is the minimum level that can claim protection against skin damage, and apply it thickly and at least every two hours.

 2. Be Wary of Skin Damage from Chlorine

Chlorine can cause premature skin aging that gets worse combined with sun exposure. Always clean your skin when you get out of the pool and spa, but use cooler water as warm water opens your pores and allows chlorine in. If you’re staying in the sun after your swim, be sure to re-apply a thick layer of sunscreen.

After finishing your day in chlorine, detoxify your skin with detoxifying ingredients such as Jade (found in Jadience Herbal Formulas) and oatmeal. If you don’t want to have to clean your tub after an oatmeal bath, try a soap that has oatmeal like Pre de Provence Body Care Spa Soap, which also contain skin restoring seaweed and soothing calendula.

3. Take Extra Care After the Beach

Sand, salt, and pollutants in the ocean water (such as sewer run-off, if you live in Southern California you know what we mean) are tough on your skin. At the very least they dry your skin, at worst they can cause rashes, and, where there is bacteria present, illness. In addition to washing or sanitizing your hands before rubbing your eyes or eating foods when still on the beach, you should exfoliate and moisturize as soon as you get home.

4. Exfoliate Your Skin and Lips

Even if you haven’t been at the pool or beach, any activities under the sun can cause damage. So, even if you have just been gardening, hiking, barbequing or taking the kids to the park, take the time to exfoliate the damaged layers of your skin and lip. It’s not just an indulgence, Dr. Oz says it’s for your health to reverse sun damage and prevent premature skin aging.
While Dr. Oz recommends the chemical alpha hydroxy acid for facial exfoliation, there are a number of less caustic natural ingredients that can be used regularly to exfoliate the skin over your entire body and your lips. Look for products that contain sugar, salt, oatmeal, finely ground granules such a apricot seeds, that help cleanse at the same time they physically remove dead skin cells; products such as Jadience’s Sugar Scrub  or Exfoliating Scrub. Make sure that you don’t rub too hard and follow-up with moisturizers appropriate for your skin type.

5. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

It’s a skin fact that cleansed and exfoliated skin requires moisturizer to replenish moisture and soothe the skin. Avoid moisturizers with carcinogenic, comodegenic, and harmful chemicals and preservatives. Nature provides hundreds of natural ingredients that support healthy skin. Parabens, phthalates, perfumes, dyes, synthetic colors, and even mineral oils (unless they are cosmetic grade) are simply not necessary to effect skin restoration. Select moisturizers with natural ingredients like Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, and Ginseng, such as the Jadience Calming Lotion for your face and the Jadience HydaNourish Body Lotion for the rest of your body.
